The Sam Houston State University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a salaried lecturer position to begin in spring 2023. The initial appointment is for a single semester, with the possibility of annual renewal on a 9-month contract basis. The position is based at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas, in the Piney Woods region of East Texas.
Primary responsibilities involve teaching core astronomy courses in our newly renovated Engaging Spaces classroom and working with the associated lab instructors. Secondary responsibilities could include instruction of introductory physics courses, especially conceptual physics, and partnering with astronomy faculty in related service activities. The instructional load is 4/4, i.e. four three-credit-hour courses for each long semester.
Candidates must possess at least a master's degree in astronomy or physics. Teaching experience is greatly valued in the selection process. The successful candidate should demonstrate ability to incorporate active learning strategies and be able to effectively teach introductory astronomy in various modalities (face-to-face, online, remote, and hybrid). Scholarly experience involving astronomy education research is preferred, but not required.
