The astrophysics division of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI; http://tdli.sjtu.edu.cn/EN/) in Shanghai, invites applications for postdoc positions in theoretical or experimental particle astrophysics. TDLI is a national research institute, initiated by Prof. Tsung-Dao Lee (Nobel Prize in Physics 1957), and its founding director is Prof. Frank Wilczek (Nobel Prize in Physics 2004). TDLI has an international environment with English as its working language, and aims to become a leading research institute in physics and astronomy.

The successful candidates will work in collaboration with Prof. Hao Zhou (experiment, https://tdli.sjtu.edu.cn/EN/people/middle/22?type=FELLOW) or Prof. Gwenael Giacinti (theory, https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9745-5738) on topics of mutual interest.

For an experimental position: Prof. Zhou’s group plays important roles in HAWC (http://hawc- observatory.org) and LHAASO (http://english.ihep.cas.cn/lhaaso) and is also involved in the developments of next-generation astro-particle experiments such as GRAND (https://grand.cnrs.fr) and SWGO (http://www.swgo.org). The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on gamma-ray data analysis from HAWC and/or LHAASO, study Galactic/extragalactic gamma-ray sources, and develop hardware and software for future astro-particle experiments. Experience in data analysis and computer programming in astrophysics or particle physics is expected. Experience in gamma-ray, cosmic-ray and/or neutrino detection techniques or analysis/interpretation of particle astrophysics data are particularly encouraged.

For a position in theory: Prof. Giacinti’s group works on a number of topics in theoretical and computational particle astrophysics, high-energy and plasma astrophysics. Candidates with expertise in, or relevant for, one or several of the following topics are especially welcome to apply: cosmic-ray physics; gamma-ray or neutrino astronomy; multi-messenger astronomy; particle acceleration at Galactic or extragalactic sources (e.g. pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, AGNs); modeling of high-energy astrophysical sources and of their non-thermal emission; cosmic-ray propagation in the interstellar /intergalactic medium; cosmic-ray impact on the interstellar medium and/or galactic winds. Experience with numerical plasma/fluid codes, or test-particle simulations is welcome, but not required.

Applicants must have a PhD in physics or astronomy by the time of appointment. The appointments are initially for two years, and may be renewed for a third year depending on performance and funding availability. It comes with a competitive annual salary ranging from 242,000 to 312,000 CNY (~ 38,000 to 49,000 USD) including housing subsidies. The start date of the appointment can be as early as March 2023 (preferred), but later start dates in Fall 2023 are also possible.
