Research Assistant Professor

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for two full-time research scientists as part of the LINCC Frameworks program (https://www.lsstcorporation.org/lincc/frameworks), with a start date of September 2023 or earlier. LINCC research scientists will work with a team of professional software engineers to develop software frameworks for time domain, extragalactic, and/or Solar System analyses with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), make use of them in original research activities, and help to provide user support and training. We seek computationally talented scientists with a background in astronomy for these appointments, which will be made at the rank of non-tenure-stream Research Assistant Professor.

The LINCC Frameworks project is a multi-institutional collaboration through the LSST Corporation (https://lsstcorporation.org) that will build analysis frameworks that can store, search, analyze and annotate data of LSST-like volume and complexity. Initial implementations of these frameworks will be tested through application to precursor survey datasets. These positions at the University of Pittsburgh are part of a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, one of the LINCC hubs.

Activities will include helping to produce, critique, and improve the LINCC frameworks as well as disseminating results. Research scientists will help to develop example notebooks, facilitate testing for science use cases, and provide user support to ensure the scientific utility of the products. Successful candidates will be able to further their own research goals via the LINCC analysis frameworks.
