PhD position in high energy astrophysics in Erlangen

The topic is application of deep learning methods in high energy astrophysics

Prof. Dr. Stefan Funk (s.funk@fau.de)

Event Details:

Monday, July 31, 2023

Location

Erlangen Center for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP) , of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU)

The gamma-ray group in the Erlangen Center for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP), of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg is seeking individuals for one PhD student position to work on machine learning for gamma-ray astronomy.

ECAP offers a strong environment in the field of astroparticle physics. Research in the group focusses on observational high-energy astrophysics (data analysis and interpretation of Fermi-LAT, H.E.S.S.-II), on machine learning techniques and on development of camera electronics for CTA, and optimisation of the science case for SWGO. In addition we are developing hardware for the Einstein Telescope (ET).

Requirements for successful applicants are a degree in Physics or equivalent. They should possess a research background and provide evidence of excellent potential. Relevant experience in software development and an ability to work in a team is seen as beneficial. Supervision and teaching of undergraduate students is expected.

The position has a 3-year term and the application deadline is July 31st. The position can be started immediately and remains open until filled. Renumeration starts at 0.5 TV-L E13 and moves to 0.66 TV-L E13.

FAU wishes to increase the participation of women in its research activities. Therefore applications by women are particularly welcome. The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is committed to employing individuals with disabilities and especially encourages them to apply.

Applications, including a Statement of Interest, CV, copies of recent certificates, and contact information of up to two reference persons should be sent to Prof. Dr. Stefan Funk (s.funk@fau.de).
